![Your 2026 Baltimore Sun Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year - Eli Aitken, Hereford, sophomore
Roughly four years ago, soccer began to lose its grip on Hereford sophomore Eli Aitken. In its place is a love of running that has already translated into a stellar career with the potential for even greater success in the future.
“Running started as a form of offseason conditioning for soccer. I always loved running, but at first I mainly used my speed and endurance to improve my soccer performance,” said Aitken, who captured a pair of state crowns this past indoor season that followed a prosperous inaugural cross-country campaign. “I was first introduced to the sport by my gym teacher in sixth grade, Mr. [James] Lewis, who saw my potential during gym class.
“Eventually, he convinced me to join the track team, where I went on to run and win some county championships along the way.”
That early foray into the sport of running continued as a seventh grader with a trip to the national meet, where Aitken placed fifth in the 800-meter run. “That experience shocked me and truly opened my eyes to how far I could pursue track,” he said. “I believe it was all set up by God — each step leading me to this sport and allowing me to discover a passion and talent for running.”
Aitken displayed that aptitude at the 2A state meet, racing his way to first place in the 800 (1:59.43) and the 1,600 (4:17.31) while finishing runner-up in the 3,200.
“Eli is incredibly talented,” Bulls coach Adam Hittner said. “I would never deny that he has some tremendous physical gifts. He is also very purposeful in his training. He understands the goals of each workout and is diligent in working to achieve his targets in training and racing.
“He listens to advice from his coaches, and more than anything, he wants to be the best. It is a permanent state of mind, not something that just turns on when the gun goes off. He focuses every single day on being the best runner, in practice, during recovery sessions, and of course on race day.”](https://scontent-den2-1.cdninstagram.com/v/t51.82787-15/669827154_18068573552664763_2942339626587581476_n.jpg?stp=dst-jpg_e35_tt6&_nc_cat=111&ccb=7-5&_nc_sid=18de74&efg=eyJlZmdfdGFnIjoiRkVFRC5iZXN0X2ltYWdlX3VybGdlbi5DMyJ9&_nc_ohc=xSlFmASy9LwQ7kNvwEbJvdy&_nc_oc=AdqbudRPo1ZvkqZu8laRnixAnGRVbVhKHALa-clWnPu5RUuMy5_iOXmE_h1UUTWxq7A&_nc_zt=23&_nc_ht=scontent-den2-1.cdninstagram.com&edm=ANo9K5cEAAAA&_nc_gid=ks_TAEoij4_ETXeFVGKZrA&_nc_tpa=Q5bMBQFZuDPHL10RZ5y7otaKshvo0NB25iW4q8_ssvVIJDm448A9R-i8nbOgeZB6Xgc_qjhCGJNWq0VD&oh=00_AQAw6sWna0Cllos1gFHyugDPBXKMamGWuSzpHnwYL4vHug&oe=6A5D7041)
